Challenges on Using Social Media

Nowadays, social media is the main medium to interact and the use of social media does not only have a good impact towards its users, but it also brings a bad impact especially to the new generation. The usage of social media reaches its critical level when some of its users, especially the teenagers admit that they are always on the social media, scrolling through the timeline 24 hours every day. One of the cons of using social media is that it can spread negative influence rapidly, for example, the spread of a bad culture that gives bad impact on society.

Every year, or at least every once in a while, challenge after challenge will emerge on the social media that could sweep the world such as The Harlem Shake, The Running Man Challenge, The Kylie Jenner Challenge and the list goes on. A new disturbing challenge has started to be popular among children which is called the ‘Momo Challenge’ which is similarly related to The Blue Whale Challenge. However, authorities around the world have warned parents about the new challenge because it encourages children to commit suicide, thus it sparks fear on the internet. Momo Challenge has been gaining attention lately and it challenges the users to communicate with anonymous individuals through the Whatsapp and Facebook applications. The challenge is for users to add contacts and call someone called ‘Momo’. It then sends scary images and vicious messages that promote violence, self-harm or suicide.

Moreover, it was reported that the challenge was also allegedly linked to the death of a 12-year-old girl in Argentina who was believed to have killed herself. If the matter was confirmed by the police, the girl was the first victim of the Momo Challenge. The challenge was reported to have spread rapidly and widely through WhatsApp and Facebook applications and the authorities do not know the real motives of the perpetrators until now.
